J
John Moore
A rich sound that is enjoyable to play

Firstly, to add perspective to the review, let me explain that I'm a beginner. I've waited 6 months or so before posting this review to get used to the slightly different key profiles and positioning which I found, at first, frustrating, if not predictable. My previous instrument was a Buffet 'Prodige'.

I wanted a clarinet that had a more rounded tone and wasn't 'thin and screechy' when sounding the higher notes (admittedly this could've been my poor technique ;-D). Well, this instrument, along with a Vandoren M30 mouthpiece (also supplied by John Packer) certainly delivers that fuller, richer tone. The keys are more responsive when compared with the Buffet (and, as I'm learning, require that little bit more accuracy :-o) and the more solid feel of the wooden instrument and keywork makes playing much more enjoyable.

The case is sturdy, compact and offers good protection but lacks anywhere to put lumpy accessories like cork grease, reed case etc. There is a thin, 'flap like' partition for sheet music/books but lumpy bits fall to the bottom and are a 'faff' to get at without removing all the aforementioned books etc. given the thickness of the case a small accessories compartment wouldn't have been hard to accommodate.

I did a bit of internet research before making this purchase and a number of suppliers refer to it as '100% made in the USA' (admittedly, to their credit, John Packer is not one of them) ... however the 'made in China' stamped on the lower joint belies this. At this price point, I had hoped for a bit more 'bespoke, western quality' and not so much 'Far Eastern production line' but such is a sign of the times. Having said that, the clarinet sounds rich (to my ear) feels like a quality instrument and plays well (when my fingers behave ;-D).

Finally, a brief mention for Alice Thomas who recommended the Leblanc, knowledgable, informative and a pleasure to deal with.
