Reeds and flutes
The woodwind family instruments had once all been made of wood, giving them their name. Today, the instruments are a combination of metal, wood and plastic. There are two main types of woodwind instruments: reed and flute instruments.
Flutes will produce sound when a direct stream of air is focused across the edge of a hole in a cylindrical tube. Reed instruments produce a sound by focusing air into a mouthpiece when then causes vibrations in the reed(s).
