Fiona Cross is a highly respected clarinet performer and teaching professional at Trinity College London. She recently tested the new JP321 Bb Wooden Clarinet and was highly impressed with its construction, tuning and character. Here's what she had to say about it:
"This new clarinet from JP Musical Instruments has impressed me with its combination of sophisticated keywork and overall evenness of sound projection.
The precision keywork will enable fluency and agility in virtuosic playing and will enhance and make easier general technique. This clarinet produces a warm, slightly dark sound and produces a variety of colours throughout all the registers. It also has good clarity, especially around the throat notes.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing this clarinet and I recommend it highly."
Fiona is principal clarinet of the Manchester Camerata and joint principal clarinet of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed concertos with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Manchester Camerata and the English Sinfonia. She has performed chamber music with various ensembles including Vanbrugh and Alberni string quartets, Kegelstatt Trio, New Music Players, LPO Ensemble and Adderbury Ensemble. She was also invited to perform chamber music with Andreas Schiff at his festival in Weimar.
New to the JP range in December 2015, the JP321 reaches new performance heights. The beautiful wooden body produces a warm and centered sound that is flexible between leaps of register. This clarinet is responsive, and capable of creating an accomplished performance by speaking well in both loud and exceedingly quiet dynamics. This midrange model excels at playing both the quick virtuoso runs, and smooth lyrical passages required for the higher grades. These are made easy on the new smooth, high grade silverplated keywork.
