Do dents matter?
An interesting patina, or now destined for scrap - do dents really make that much difference?
We get asked time and time again, whether the dents in an instrument will affect its sound or tone. While of course dents takes away from the cosmetic value of the instrument, the answer to brass instruments is generally no, but that does depend on the size of the dent and on the position of the dent.
Speaking from a brass players perspective, the lead pipe is the most important part of the instrument. If there is a dent in this, then it will affect the tone/sound production much more than a dent further down the tubing.
