JP 021 Clarinet Bb Nickel Plated Keys Ideal starter instrument. Designed to be user friendly at an affordable price and to get the novice through the early grades. Supplied with case, case cover (inc shoulder strap), mouthpiece, ligature, cap and reed. High performance at a low price.

The 021 clarinet is the same design as the mark IV clarinet, but with budget case and nickel plated keys to make it more accessible in terms of cost.

Like the tenor (JP042) and sop (JP043) I recently bought, the MK3 flute and MK4 clarinet have lived up to my expectations. The flute has a clear, even sound throughout and the lip plate design enables one to obtain a much even legato control even at pianissimo. I used it in anger on a show recently which entailed a lot of unison flute with trumpet and tenor, and the intonation is superb. The clarinet also has an even, clear sound and for a resin based student model it can only give confidence to a young player. I'm going to try it with a wooden barrel and bell on my next show and have no doubt that it will play as well as anything I have previously used.

For us guys who have been in the business for some considerable time, to be able to use such instruments as these is refreshing and exciting - a new lease of life in a way. They are such a joy to play, but because of the testimonials you must be getting from me and my ilk, please don't let the makers get swollen heads and hoist the prices!

Best regards,

John Franchi

John has been a player at the top of the profession for many years and now, among other things, plays in London's West End and does regular session work.

The 121 Mark IV was used by John in the recording of the Royal Variety performance 2007!

Those readers who are clarinet teachers will be aware of the wide variety of student quality clarinets that are now on the market both from music shops and the internet. Some instruments should be avoided at all costs being poorly made and if purchased will only lead to frustration both for the player and the teacher! “Well the shop says it’s ok for a beginner and can be exchanged for a better instrument later”. From time to time this mantra has been repeated by a parent to me despite my attempts at fore warning!

The student needs a good quality instrument if they are going to progress. The recently launched John Packer Clarinet Model 121 Mark 4 is worthy of serious consideration. Seeing its Mark 4 implies some improvements have been made to the original JP student clarinet. Having seen the original instrument I would say that attention has been given to feel of the instrument and it has a response that will suit a young beginner. The model I have seen was free blowing with good intonation. The mouth piece is basic and adequate and I know JP offer the opportunity to up grade to, for example, a Vandoren mouthpiece. The key work is well made, silver plated and comfortable. The thumb rest is adjustable. The case will appeal to the student in that a zipped cover is provided complete with shoulder strap. The recommended retail price is £250 discounted at present to £129. This price will appeal to school and music service purchasers who purchasing in bulk, striving to widen opportunities for children to learn musical instruments, require dependable instruments.
