JP 141 Alto Sax with Selmer Crook - A standard only previously dreamed of!

I've just come home from a recording session in which I was required to multitrack an entire saxophone section. On this, I was required to play in a variety of styles, and rather fearsomely, quite a bit of unison at extremes of the range. I took along my JP 141 with its Selmer Crook, my trusty JP 042 tenor and my 1962 Selmer Mark 6 baritone. I got all of it done in one take per instrument per track.

If you need an alto sax which is entirely dependable over four octaves at all dynamics, then you may consider the JP141 with the Selmer Crook. By adding the Selmer crook to the proven JP141, the Boys From Taunton have strengthened the sound and response of the original near-perfect design to a standard only previously dreamed of.

I took this combination out with me this weekend just gone to the Newark jazz festival, where I used it on three of the four gigs I was scheduled to do (the other one was on clarinet). It has such a sound in it that I didn't use a microphone, and at no time was there a note on the instrument that didn't want to sound. I've had my world turned upside down by these saxophones. Try them if you dare!

Pete Long has had (and is still having!) an illustrious playing career whose credits include Jools Holland R & B Orchestra, Stereophonics, Dizzy Gillespie, BBC Big Band, BBC Concert Orchestra, Chick Corea and Paul McCartney etc. He is still very busy doing sessions and West End work.

Please note that, as is common practice, Pete uses his own choice of mouthpiece on this saxophone.

The Blues 141 has excellent tuning throughout the 3 registers and is incredibly stable throughout the whole range. This saxophone is a very solid instrument – it is fairly weighty, but not overly so. This makes it a powerful instrument, with a great deal of dynamic flexibility and very good tonal response.

When I tried out this instrument, in addition to playing it myself – solo, and in a big band – I gave it to a number of my students to try. The students were of all abilities, and every one of them found the instrument easy to work with. The beginners found it really easy blowing, and the more advanced students found it to be really responsive.

The excellent pre and post sale care of John Packer Ltd, coupled with the excellent qualities of this new saxophone, make this instrument, in my opinion, simply the best instrument in it’s class.”
