The trombone is a descendent of the sackbut and has changed little since the 14th centruy. The tenor is in two standard froms: Bb and Bb/F. The latter has a thumb operated trigger allowing access to an additional length of tube. Other forms include the mini; the alto; the valve (with static of moving slide) and the bass trombone etc. Trombones are non-transposing instruments except within the brass band where the tenor trombones are notated in the treble rather than the bass clef. Trombones are standard members of orchestras, brass bands and many jazz ensembles.
